    Togwotee Pass Backcountry Alliance,

Thanks for working on this. It is a great undertaking.

Are you intending to address nordic skiing issues as well? I take the term “backcountry skiing” these days to refer mostly to alpine skiing done in the backcountry. I would argue that nordic skiers (of the touring-cross country-skinny ski variety) are impacted even more acutely by snow machines than are backcountry skiers who tend toward the higher slopes.

Michelle and Magdalena and I just had great weekend ski on togwotee. We would be happy to help in any way we can. As a member of the board at WOC I will look for an opportunity to encourage WOC’s attention to the TPBA.

This site is great! Been busy up in the backyard out of Dubois. Not too many BC skiers in this village of 964 inhabitants. I work at the Wind River Ranger District for the Shoshone National Forest. I have created several ski trail maps of our 4 cross-country/back-country ski trail systems. We have easier areas like Falls Creek and Deception Creek systems and more difficult terrain such as Pinnacles Loops and Sublette Peak (observed a grizzly on this peak on Jan. 2nd, 07) I can supply these maps to you via email if so desired - they include topo and aerial image backgrounds. You can reach me there at “mengler@fs.fed.us”. or 307.455.2466
You can also call or write if you want an up-to-date upcountry weather report or the latest ski conditions. Last night was the full moon so Dustin and I went up at 930 pm to Deception Creek xc trail and zipped around in -10 degree, clear as a bell full-moon weather, on Feb 1, 2006. Got out at 1130 after firing up a nice warming fire! Hey, thanks for this website! Recently I reported sleds in the Teton Wilderness to the Bridger Teton NF officials - the sledders were NE of Breccia Peak, well within the wilderness boundary. If you have any similar wilderness intrusions to report, do not hestiate to contact me. I work with our law enforcement officer based in Lander as well as in Jackson. I am working on a proposal with BT officials to post wilderness boundary signs along entry/exit points and to post maps in high-use parking areas where snowmobiles congregate. Hopefully, this will help educate snowmobiler users of nearby wilderness areas and eventually help to improve compliance with this issue.

To Whom it may concern: For years now, I have been riding snomobiles (1980 to present) in the area submitted / considered for closure. I ride the Brooks Lake/Togettee area several times a year normally. Again I marvel as to how any individual can decide / demand which areas should close to winter activity (namely snowmobiles in the winter time ) and which areas should stay open. I understand the need for closure due to damage to the enviorment which can be a large issue for anyone, myself included.. I would agree to closing areas where there is notable damage to the enviorment caused by my snowmobile or other snowmobiles. My concern is this. Show me this or any area in the month of August where any snowmobiler has caused a problem to the enviorment during the winter snow covered months. I doubt that you can even tell where we have been or passed by. Did we leave a candy wrapper or something, yes mabey by mistake but other than that show me in August where I road my snowmobile last January or February or March since 1980. I doubt anyone would be able to answer this question. One item you might discover is that I increased the local economy with my presence by leaving thousands of dollars in this area which you no longer require apparently. Oh by the way I also attend this ares in the summer time where I do see presence of horses, hiking etc that is possibly damaging the enviorment some. I have nothing against these same users however why eliminate what God has given all man kind to enjoy. Might want to check it out sometime. Thanks Jim Berkenpas from IOWA. P.S. Your welcome anytime no matter what form of transportation you use.
